ABOUT

Six teen boys died by suicide between 2012 and 2014; 3 of those died in a 9 month period. All of these boys attended the same Northern Virginia high school. These deaths have left a crater of sadness and unanswered questions in our minds.

Who Are We?

We are not doing this because we have the answers, although we believe that through collaboration we will discover ways that lead us to healthy, happy and safe lives. This forum is a way to learn from each other and continue to build a strong community of teens, parents and other community members.

What are our goals?

  • Hear what's on the minds of our teens

  • Facilitate and/or implement actions that create a community safety net

  • Learn from each other and professionals about ways to deal with adversity. For example, how do we build resilience and tap into the psychological and health benefits of optimism?

What do you gain by joining the Community of Solutions?

  • Another opportunity to connect with our teens

  • Learning about why teens don't seek help

  • Hearing teens and parents concerns, ideas and solutions during a 1 1/2 hr meeting

  • A reality check about what is really happening HERE: drugs, alcohol, depression, stress

  • Getting to know many people in the Washington, DC Metro region (NOT just Fairfax County) who have common interests and resources

We're all in this together and we all have a lot to share!

Why would your teen want to join in these discussions?

  • Build leadership and community service skills

  • Be a part of sharing our learnings

  • Identify ways to be there for friends in need, in person and using social media
